How does artificial intelligence influence today’s media landscape – and how can it both spread and uncover disinformation? These issues were addressed in the one-off TV format “KI im Fokus: Opportunities, Risks and Creative Uses”, produced by students from the European Media Studies programme at the University of Potsdam and the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, and aired on ALEX Offener Kanal Berlin.

Connecting Research and Practice

Moritz Demmig, project lead for media innovation at rbb, joined the programme as an expert on behalf of the news-polygraph research consortium. Alongside Aljoscha Burchardt (DFKI) and Marius Zoschke (MIZ Babelsberg), he discussed the dual role of AI in today’s information ecosystems: as a risk in spreading disinformation, and as a powerful tool in its detection.

AI-Powered Verification

Within news-polygraph, rbb collaborates with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) to develop verification tools tailored to the needs of journalistic workflows. The aim is to combine AI-based detection with editorial oversight, always with attention to explainability, transparency, and data protection.

Media Literacy in Action

“KI im Fokus” is a strong example of how interdisciplinary education, media practice, and applied research can intersect – making complex technological issues tangible and accessible.
